Last night Wayne Swan announced projections that the federal budget will be effectively a ‘balanced budget’ in 2012-13 with a nominal surplus of $1.5 billion. The surplus is forecast to rise to $2 billion in 2013-14 and to $5.3 billion the following year.

The main indicator of prices received by Australian oil and gas producers, the Tapis oil price, is up almost 51 percent over the past two and a half years. This should have brought cheer to investors in the energy sector, however this has not been the case.
