The importance of travel insurance

Looking forward to an upcoming holiday?

Given recent reports, there’s a good chance it will be a cruise. According to Cruise Lines International Association's latest report, Australia is world’s fastest-growing cruise market. More than a million Australians took a cruise in 2015 – a number that’s expected to double over the next four years.

While cruising can be a fun and affordable holiday option, there may be costs you haven’t considered.

On 20 June, a tour bus carrying 12 Australian P&O Pacific Dawn passengers collided with another bus carrying locals in Vanuatu’s capital Port Vila. Seven Australian tourists were seriously injured and three locals were killed. The seven injured Australians were airlifted to Brisbane hospitals.

The first plane of injured passengers arrived in Australia last Tuesday afternoon carrying a husband and wife in their 70s from NSW who were taken to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH).

Three other victims, including a four-year-old girl, arrived in two planes and were transported to RBWH, Prince Alexandra Hospital and Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.  Another woman in her 70s arrived in Brisbane on Wednesday afternoon and was transported to Prince Alexandra Hospital.

Injuries included significant compound, open fractures to femurs and upper arms that required surgical intervention.

An 11-year old Australian boy who was critically injured remains in hospital in Noumea with a head injury and has since been joined by his mother and brother.

With five air ambulances required to fly the injured travellers home, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop urged people to ensure they have insurance.

“This is a very important point — if you can't afford travel insurance you really cannot afford to travel overseas, so it is as fundamental as taking out insurance,” she said.

A tragedy like this could happen anytime. Without travel insurance, an affordable holiday can turn into both an emotional and financial nightmare. Ensure you and your family are protected with travel insurance.
