September was all about footy — both AFL and Rugby League.

Providing financial education to AFL players
Over the last 15 years we are proud to have had an enduring relationship with the AFL Players Association.

We provide an extensive financial education program to all AFL players nationally including financial literacy workshops and one-on-one meetings. We help players understand their contracts and improve their financial education with the ultimate goal of ensuring that players leave the AFL system with the financial skills and knowledge necessary for long term financial success.

We also assist ex-AFL players with their career paths for life after football with four ex-players now working within Shadforth as financial advisers. They are Brad Wira (WA), Mark Porter (VIC), Cheynee Stiller (QLD) and Ben Ross (VIC).

AFL Coaches Association (AFLCA)
This year we were proud to be the sponsoring partner of the AFL Coaches Association Awards and the prestigious AFLCA Annual Coaches Award night. The awards recognise the outstanding contribution AFL coaches make to the game. As part of our relationship with the AFLCA we provide all AFL coaches the opportunity to receive financial advice.

This year awards went to:

  • Dustin Martin (Richmond) Shadforth Financial Group AFLCA Player of the Year
  • Clayton Oliver (Melbourne) Shadforth Financial Group Best Young Player

Our CEO, Angus Benbow, was proud to present the Shadforth Financial Group AFLCA Coaching Legend award to Malcolm Blight. The former North Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide and St Kilda coach guided the Adelaide Crows to two consecutive premierships in 1997 and 1998, and took the Geelong Cats to three Grand Final appearances in 1989, 1992 and 1994. He was inducted by former Adelaide Crows colleague, Neil Craig.

Rugby League Players Association
With similar objectives as the AFLPA program, we’ve recently partnered with the Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) to setup a program of financial education for NRL players. As part of our commitment to assisting ex-players with career paths, Ben Creagh, former St George Illawarra Dragons captain, recently joined us as a Financial Wellbeing Adviser to oversee the program.

In September, as part of this partnership, we sponsored the Shadforth Financial Group RLPA/NRL Wellbeing and Education Awards. These awards recognise players who have combined academic achievement with a full-time rugby league career.

The awards included the Indigenous Leadership and Excellence which was awarded to Ryan James (Gold Coast Titans) and the NRL Academic Player of the Year which was awarded to Tim Mannah (Parramatta Eels).
